DESIGN OF MULTISTOREY BUILDINGS TUTORIAL # 01 | USING SAP 2000

Sap 2000 is a computer based structural analysis software. This powerful tool is now days extensively used for multiple engineering structures including Multistorey Buildings, Bridges, Shear walls etc.

In these tutorials we will be designing a multistorey building (Plaza) step by step from start to its final analysis and design.

  • Open sap2000
  • At bottom left corner of window select units “as shown below” > Kip, in, F

  • File > New Model (Clt + N) > Initialize modal from defaults with units “same units as previously defined.i.e Kip, in, F.

  • Grid only “new window will get open” >  Quick Grid Lines > Cartesian > Number of Grid lines in X,Y, Z direction are given as shown. > Grid Spacing in X, Y, Z direction is given as shown. > First Grid line location X=0, Y=0, Z=0 > OK.

Now new window will be appeared, there are tow views of the model previously defined as shown below, one is 3-D view, other is plan view and may be xy, yz, zx, yz etc. The plan view selected will be automatically highlighted in 3-D view, which makes it easier for the designer to know which view is currently active, if some is not comfortable the 3-D view might be off and can continue with plan views.

  • “Right click on open space “ > Edit Grid Data > Define Grid System Data “Check units must be the same as previously defined” > Display Grids as > select spacing > Bubble size = 25 > X,Y and Z Grid data is given as shown > OK
